Hand In Hand Activities CIC is busy trying to revive our old activities and this week saw the re-launch of the Happy Wanderers – a social group who go for day trips to various places as decided through regular consultation with attendees.

On Thursday 16th September, the Happy Wanderers set off in McChadwick (the Renault Master Minibus) for a day out at Seaham Beach. Following the announcement of funding for resin workshops, it quickly became apparent that many resin participants would be interested in using sea glass in their creations. Depending on the size of the work being created, a lot of sea glass can be required to cover a really small space. It was decided that an impromptu trip to Seaham Beach would be beneficial, not only for the collection of the sea glass for craft workshop use, but also because it had been a long time since McChadwick had stretched his legs and taken passengers on a trip out. I believe that the last trip where McChadwick was utilised was a visit to the Hutton Rudby pantomime in January 2020! Since then, the minibus had been used purely for the transport of Trixie Trishaw as part of the Cycling Without Age Stockton on Tees Chapter which was only launched in August 2021.

The passengers were picked up outside of Grays Road Institute on Thursday morning and the weather was just perfect! We plodding along up the A19 before dropping passengers off at the ‘Tommy’ statue and parking McChadwick in the Vane Tempest car park. As our arrival coincided with high tide, we used the opportunity to explore Seaham Harbour and enjoy a fish and chip lunch at Gills, where we were able to sit outside overlooking ‘Tommy’, the epitaph and a singer who serenaded people nearby with songs for yesteryear.

After lunch, we took a slow walk down to the beach where we spent an hour collecting sea glass and avoiding the waves which were determined to dampen our feet but certainly not our spirits. The beach was very busy with families, dog walkers and fellow sea glass collectors so we took ourselves up to Chilled Out Gelato to enjoy ice creams and hot drinks before our journey back home.

In the minibus on the way home the group decided that they would like to visit Ripon Market next, which takes place in Ripon Market Place every Thursday. Plans are now underway for this trip. If you would be interested in joining us, please check back or keep an eye on our social media accounts for dates and details.

I had a wonderful time out with the rest of the happy wanderers!
The weather was beautiful, so we took the opportunity to spend time together viewing the wonderful sights in Seaham. We took photographs with Tommy and were serenaded by a street performer on the beach while we had coffee. The group then went around finding suitable, lovely stones and glass from the beach and got our feet wet! To top it all off we had some delicious fish and chips together. A great day was had by all, many thanks to Allison for driving the minibus for us and we are all looking forward to our next trip with the happy wanderers (including Oscar!).
